Prancing Pony (Fury): The Saddles

This record is created to display the types of saddles worn by the Prancing Pony (Fury).

The Western Pony and Prancing Pony shared the same original snap/no cinch saddles. There are no mold marks on any of the saddles released with the Prancing Pony from 1954-1962; and, starting with the 1998 and newer models, they had a Breyer/Reeves Copyright stamp. Typically, the black saddles were released with the black, black pinto and alabaster models; whereas, the brown (varying shades) were released on the brown pinto and palomino models.

It is estimated that the rider-less Prancing Pony was released around 1955, but not pictured in the catalogs. It can be assumed that high grommet saddles were used, as shown with the Western Pony catalog photos from 1955-1959. In the 1958-1959 catalog, there is a low grommet saddle pictured on the rider-less Prancing Pony. See photos for the differences between the two grommets.

Around 1954, when the Cowboy rider was released, it was realized the Cowboy did not fit well on the high grommet saddle, so a new saddle was created. This saddle did not have any grommets or a cinch, but allowed for the Cowboy to sit more comfortably as the seat was made a bit larger. These are estimated to have been around until 1957/1958.

From 1955-1956, the Cavalry style saddle was released with the Kit Carson and Davy Crockett models. This is a brown plastic saddle with molded on saddle blanket and bedroll with a pull-through cinch.

From 1955-1959, the English style saddle, with separate plastic saddle blanket, was released with the Canadian Mountie. The saddle was dark brown with a pull-through cinch, and the saddle blanket was typically blue with a yellow border. Estimated around 1956-1957, there was the English saddle with a red saddle blanket (rider-less). This is the same type of saddle as shown on the Race Horse/Derby Winner #36.

From 1956-1959, a Medieval style saddle was released with Robin Hood. These were a dark brown with high pommel and cantle, molded on saddle blanket and a pull through cinch. In 1999, this set was re-issued as 'Robin Hood and Prancer', but the saddle was a soft pliable plastic, and has a Breyer Reeves Copyright stamp.

From 1958-1965, the Fury release had a green and white paper saddle with "TV's Fury" printed in white. The cinch was actually glued together, so it was easy to rip off, which makes them very uncommon to find today.

In 1957, a vinyl grooming kit saddle was available through Sears.

From 1954-1957, The Western Pony and Prancing Pony share the same fabric bareback blanket with elastic band cinch with the Indian rider. Blankets were typically red, but came in several patterns (as shown in photo). These bareback blankets came with the black and brown pinto Prancers.

In 2016, the newer hard plastic, no cinch (slip on) saddle was released. These are typically only found on the Western Pony; however, this was a small release of 45 as a prize model.
