Constantia

"With the thunder of hooves and a cloud of dust, Constantia makes herself known as she flies down the track at a breakneck speed. This mare means business. Standardbreds can be traced back to a multitude of breeds, such as the Morgan, Narragansett Pacer, and Thoroughbred. The first Standardbred registry was opened in 1879. The breed got their name from the fact that historically, the horse had to meet racing speed standards in order to be registered. Unlike Thoroughbreds, which race under saddle, Standardbreds race in harness with a driver on a two-wheeled cart called a sulky. When racing, Standardbreds will perform either a trot or a pace. Constantia is a 'trotter' – she performs a standard two-beat diagonal gait, but at phenomenal speeds of up to 30 MPH, making her one of the fastest-trotting horses in the world. Standardbreds are heavier in build than their close cousin, the Thoroughbred, but are every bit as strong and athletic.

Constantia is a collaboration between the talented artist who created Breyer’s Lonesome Glory and Maggie Jenner-Bennett. Captured mid-trot with a determined expression, phenomenal leg extension, and mane and tail flying behind her, it’s not hard to picture this beauty tearing down the racetrack to raucous cheers. While Standardbreds are commonly bay, sabino markings have been known to appear in the breed on occasion. In her first work for Breyer, artist Kristen Cermele gave Constantia a spectacular bay sabino pinto coat. A chalky basecoat allows her gorgeous shading to come through, and thoughtful details like slight sun-bleaching in her mane and tail breathe life into this powerful mare." www.breyerhorses.com.
