This hardy breed is native to the Pampas region but has far-reaching influence within South America and throughout the world. Horses in the Buenos Aires region can be traced back to the 1500s when the first Spaniards reached the Rio de la Plata. These horses were later abandoned, and as a feral population they developed traits that helped them survive the extreme temperatures and conditions of the region, lending them the vigor and stamina that they are known for today.
Even in the modern world, Criollo horses are still prized as working cow horses, especially in South America. Crillos can often be found as mounts of gauchos – skilled horsemen known for their extremely complex displays of equestrianism. They have also been crossed with lighter breeds such as Thoroughbreds to create sleek, agile Argentine polo ponies used by players worldwide. Their variety of colors, including dilutes and pinto patterns, are often responsible for the eye-catching mounts found on the polo field.
Bandalero was sculpted by Morgen Kilbourn, an artist known for her dynamic poses and faithful breed portrayals. Morgen often works from life, studying the intricacies of her real horses’ movements. Bandalero’s unique pose is a high-speed lead change, a maneuver which is useful in a variety of competitive events.
