This is the #40 Black Western Pony in set #540 Kit Carson. (See separate record for #40 model details). Set included a Kit Carson rider with removable hat and neckerchief, hunting knife and rifle. A brown plastic cavalry style saddle was released with this set. This saddle has molded on saddle blanket and bedroll with a pull-through cinch. Same saddle that was released with Davy Crockett. This set is pictured with the star version of the Black Western Pony; however, the bald face version was also available. Shown in a 1960 Insemikit mail order catalog, but these may have been leftover models.
Kit Carson has dark brown or black hair, light tan or grey jacket and dark brown pants and moccasins. He came with a removable hat, neckerchief, rifle and knife. There are two different variations of the knife, one released with the Indian, and one released for Crockett/Carson - see photos. Kit Carson and Davy Crockett are the same mold, sculpted by Chris Hess, and have no mold marks or Copyright stamps. One significant difference between these two molds, is Kit has a groove cut into the underside of his right hand to help hold his rifle.
