"Jeanne Mellin Herrick, a loyal fan of the Morgan breed herself, created Breyer’s Sherman Morgan sculpture in 1987 as part of the Artist Series. Jeanne was known especially for her Morgan-themed flat art, which depicted the beauty of the breed with style and grace. Sherman Morgan’s prancing pose is reminiscent of many of her Morgan horse paintings.
The real Sherman Morgan was a son of Justin Morgan, foaled in approximately 1808 in Vermont. His name came from his breeder, James Sherman, who settled his family in Vermont after moving north from Rhode Island. Small in stature but powerfully built, Sherman Morgan was worked heavily in his early life, but became highly-valued as a sire in his later years.” www.breyerhorses.com.
