The Friesian breed is known by many as the solid jet-black steed that carries itself gracefully through both the dressage arena and the silver screen, but occasionally you will find a fiery chestnut, or 'fox' Friesian. This genetic anomaly comes from stallion lines that are heterozygous for chestnut – if bred with a mare that also carries chestnut genes, there is a 25% chance the pairing will produce a chestnut foal.
Although chestnut Friesians are not accepted in some breed registries, these rare gems have plenty of fans!
